India-UK FTA: Text to Be Finalised Within Three Months, Deal Signing to Follow

India and the UK are expected to finalise the text of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA) within the next three months, following a joint legal review, government officials said. This will pave the way for the formal signing of the much-anticipated trade pact.

Regarding whisky imports, Indian officials clarified that no concession involving Minimum Import Pricing (MIP) has been offered under the FTA. They added that tariff reductions on alcohol and automobiles were pragmatic decisions made in India’s interest.

Once finalised, the agreement text will be submitted to the British Parliament for ratification. However, due to the procedural requirements in the UK, officials believe the agreement may take over a year to come into full effect.

“We’ve concluded negotiations and jointly released the broad framework of the deal. Detailed information will be shared after further coordination with the UK,” one official noted.

Officials expressed confidence that the India-UK FTA will serve as a benchmark or ‘gold standard’ for India’s future trade agreements and global trade engagement strategies.
